Family Portrait Project

In July 2011 Desert2Surf for the first time visited the remote indigenous community of Beswick. Beswick lies 110kms south-east of Katherine on the Central Arnhem Highway, in the Northern Territory, Australia.

The aim of the visit was for Desert2Surf to further explore the concept of family and belonging in a remote indigenous community.

Joseph, Michael, Peter, Justin, Brentley and Adam were invited to involve their families in a family portrait photographic event. They were all asked to describe, in words, what family means to them.

The following selection of photographs is the result of this touching and enriching project.

Desert2Surf would like to thank:

-Optus for the ‘Connecting Communities Grant’

-the beautiful, welcoming people of the Beswick Community

-the Roper Gulf Shire Youth Service Team for it’s logistical support
